The End of an Era, the Beginning of a New Adventure
Jack Miller, the sole Australian rider in MotoGP, shares his mixed feelings about the upcoming change in Australia's MotoGP venue. While he mourns the loss of the legendary Phillip Island racetrack, he also expresses excitement for the new Adelaide 'street circuit' that will take its place from 2027 onwards.
"It's a bittersweet moment," Miller reflects. "Phillip Island has been my home track for so long, and it's an incredible loss to see it depart from the MotoGP calendar. But I'm also thrilled that Australia is taking a bold step forward with this new city-center venue in Adelaide. It's a unique opportunity, and I can't wait to see how it unfolds."
A Magical Island, a Vibrant City
Miller, who was present at the official announcement in Adelaide, shares his impressions of the new location. "Walking through the city and hearing the locals' enthusiasm is truly heartwarming. They're overjoyed to have MotoGP right in their backyard, and that's a wonderful feeling."
However, leaving Phillip Island won't be easy. "It's always tough to say goodbye to a place as magical as Phillip Island. But when I think of Adelaide in November, I envision perfect weather and an electric atmosphere in the city. The energy will be incredible, and the proximity to the city center will make it a unique experience for fans and riders alike."
The Track: A Balaton-Inspired Layout
But here's where it gets controversial... Miller compares the proposed Adelaide track layout to the Balaton Park circuit in Hungary, known for its stop-and-go nature. "The Adelaide track gives me a similar vibe, but it's not isolated like Balaton. It's right in the heart of the city, which is pretty cool."
And this is the part most people miss... Miller clarifies that, despite being called a 'street circuit', the Adelaide track is actually located in a parkland setting, ensuring the necessary safety features for MotoGP standards. "When we discussed the design with Carlos Ezpeleta, we realized that many existing MotoGP tracks have walls closer to the track than what we'll have in Adelaide. The Aussies are known for their commitment to safety and quality, so I have full confidence in their build."
A New Icon in the Making?
The four-time MotoGP race winner acknowledges that the Adelaide track won't match the thrill of Phillip Island. "Street circuits are a different beast. They're not known for their amazing layouts or dramatic hills. But we have to weigh our options. With so many magnificent tracks already on the calendar, it's exciting to have a unique city-center venue like Adelaide."
The Final Chapter at Phillip Island
The final Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island will take place from October 23-25, marking the end of an iconic era. Adelaide is then set to host its inaugural MotoGP race in November 2027, kicking off a new chapter in Australian motorsport history.
