Raúl Sánchez Architects has breathed new life into a historic Spanish home, blending modern touches with the original sailor's grandeur. The project began with a simple yet profound request: to transform a space that felt trapped in a distorted past into a functional and aesthetically pleasing home office for the great-great-grandson of the original sailor, Manuel Cuyas.
The house, originally two separate dwellings, was merged by Antoni Cuyas in 1865, a testament to his desire to return to his native Mataro after a lifetime at sea. The renovation focused on three key areas: the entrance hall, dining room, and living area, aiming to restore the house's grandeur while accommodating modern needs.
In the living area, a stainless steel platform serves as a versatile workspace and storage solution. Its unique design, with desks at either end and a built-in sofa, creates a dynamic and functional space. The preservation of the original ceiling, wallpaper, and terracotta-tile floor adds a sense of history, while the resin treatment ensures its longevity. The perimeter tiling, replaced with white micromortar, provides a striking contrast.
The dining room showcases a blend of old and new. Dark oak flooring complements the decorative wainscotting, while a climate control system ensures comfort. The addition of stainless steel shelves and the Orseolo table by Carlo Scarpa adds a touch of modern elegance. The entrance hall, once cluttered with discordant additions, has been stripped and transformed into a bold vermillion red.
