Penguins forward prospect Tiernan Shoudy is making waves in the hockey world, and for good reason. At just 24 years old, he's already showing promise as a defensively responsible forward with a knack for playmaking and scoring. But what makes Shoudy truly fascinating is his journey from college hockey to the professional ranks, and the lessons he's learned along the way.
A Smooth Transition to Pro Hockey
After signing with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) last spring, Shoudy got his feet wet in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers. This was a strategic move by the Pittsburgh Penguins management, who wanted to see how he'd fare in the lower leagues before committing to a full-time professional contract. And what a smooth transition it was! Shoudy quickly adapted to the pro game, joining the Nailers for their final six regular-season games and 15 Kelly Cup playoff games.
"I was a little surprised by the pace and style of play," Shoudy admitted during the Penguins development camp in July. "It was a great experience to get a feel for pro hockey, even though it's the East Coast level. It's still a different game, and it took some adjusting. But I'm glad I did it because I now know what to expect and feel more confident going into next year."
A Defensive Powerhouse with Offensivé Potential
What stands out about Shoudy is his ability to be a defensive powerhouse while also contributing offensively. As a forward, he's solid in the faceoff circle and excels on the penalty kill, a crucial aspect of modern hockey. Penguins assistant general manager Amanda Kessel praised his high character and praised his ability to get pucks back on the forecheck, a key skill for any team.
"He's a dog on the puck," Kessel said. "He gets pucks back, and that's what we liked about him. He's a high-character kid, and we believe he can continue to develop and use his defensive style of play. While we want our bottom-six players to produce, we also need someone to keep the puck out of the net."
And Shoudy delivered in that regard, too. During his stint with the Nailers, he managed a goal and two assists in the regular season and another goal with three assists during the playoffs, a solid showing for a player coming off a seven-goal, 13-assist senior season at Michigan State.
A Versatile Player with a Bright Future
Shoudy's versatility is what makes him so intriguing. Standing at just 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, he's an undersized winger, but his work ethic and confidence in the offensive zone are impressive. He's a player who can do whatever the coach asks, and that's a valuable trait in the NHL.
"I want to round out my offensive game a little more," Shoudy said. "I've always had the defensive side with the draws and the hard work, but I want to continue improving. I think I've made some progress last season, and I'll keep working on it."
With his impressive debut and the confidence he's gained, Shoudy is well-positioned to compete for a role with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton next season. His ability to adapt quickly to the pro game and his all-around skills make him a player to watch in the AHL.
